Preqin vs. HFR

Preqin vs HFR hedge fund database comparison

Preqin and HFR are both “hedge fund data providers.” In practice, comparing them is a bit like comparing a department store to a butcher shop. Both sell meat. One sells it alongside furniture, clothing, and electronics. The other has spent 30 years perfecting one cut.

Preqin, in this analogy, is the department store: a sprawling platform covering hedge funds, private equity, venture capital, real estate, infrastructure, and private debt, with a deep investor database and fundraising intelligence layered on top.  HFR is the specialist: hedge fund indices, performance data, and benchmarking tools used by institutions managing trillions in assets.

Most people comparing these two are not choosing between them for the same task. They are trying to figure out which task they actually need done. This guide should help with that.

Where Each One Belongs

Preqin belongs on the desk of someone who allocates capital across alternatives, tracks LP mandates, or manages fundraising pipelines. Hedge funds are one piece of a larger portfolio view.

HFR belongs on the desk of someone who benchmarks hedge fund returns, selects managers based on performance, or needs IOSCO-certified indices for regulatory compliance. Hedge funds are the entire view.

Neither belongs in the workflow of someone who just needs to email 500 hedge fund portfolio managers. That job costs $117, not $15,000.

Preqin: What It Does

Preqin was founded in London in 2003, originally as Private Equity Intelligence. It has since grown into the most comprehensive data platform for institutional allocators in the alternatives space. BlackRock’s $3.2 billion acquisition in early 2025 confirmed what the industry already knew: Preqin’s data is essential plumbing for the alternative investment ecosystem.

For hedge fund users specifically, Preqin provides fund profiles covering 30,000+ funds, performance data, AUM tracking, and manager contact details. But the platform’s real value is everything surrounding the fund data. Its investor database profiles thousands of institutional LPs with allocation mandates, commitment histories, consultant relationships, and strategy preferences. Its fundraising intelligence tracks which funds are in market, how much they are targeting, and which investors are likely to participate.

Preqin also covers PE, VC, real estate, infrastructure, private debt, and natural resources.  If you work across multiple asset classes, you can run your entire research workflow from a single login.

Pricing: $15,000 to $50,000+ per year. Not published. Annual contracts.

HFR: What It Does

HFR is based in Chicago and has been the benchmark provider for the hedge fund industry since the early 1990s. Its HFRI Index family covers 500+ indices across 11 families, broken down by strategy, sub-strategy, and regional focus.  They carry IOSCO compliance and ESMA BMR certification, making them one of the few hedge fund benchmarks that satisfy European regulatory requirements for institutional use.

The company tracks 7,500+ active hedge funds and maintains a Dead Funds database of 23,000+ products that have stopped reporting or liquidated. HFR publishes widely cited quarterly reports on industry capital flows, new fund launches, and liquidations. Its data has been used by organizations managing a combined $48 trillion in assets.

But here is what HFR doesn’t do: It doesn’t cover PE, VC, real estate, or infrastructure. It doesn’t maintain an investor/LP database. It does not offer fundraising intelligence. And it provides minimal contact data for outreach purposes. HFR is hedge fund performance.

When Preqin Is the Right Call

Preqin makes sense when hedge fund data is part of a broader workflow. Here are the profiles that fit:

Allocator. You manage a pension fund or endowment that invests across alternatives. You need to track hedge fund performance alongside PE commitments, real estate valuations, and infrastructure allocations.  You also need to know which other institutions are investing in the same funds, and what mandates are coming up for review. Preqin is the only platform that puts all of this in one place.

Capital introduction professional. You connect hedge fund managers with prospective investors. Your job requires knowing which LPs are actively seeking hedge fund exposure, what strategies they prefer, and how much they typically commit – that is Preqin’s investor database in action.

Consultant.  You advise institutional clients on their full alternatives allocation. Running that advisory practice from three or four separate databases is possible but painful. Preqin consolidates the workflow.

When HFR Is the Right Call

HFR makes sense when hedge fund benchmarking is the job, not a component of the job. These are the roles where it shines:

Institutional risk team. Your mandate references the HFRI Fund Weighted Composite Index. Your quarterly performance report compares your hedge fund allocation against HFRI sub-strategy benchmarks. Switching to a different index provider would mean restating years of historical comparisons. HFR is not optional here. It is embedded in your process.

Academic researcher. You are writing a paper on hedge fund returns and you need a dataset with 30+ years of history, survivorship-bias correction through the Dead Funds database, and indices granular enough to isolate specific strategy effects. HFRI data appears in hundreds of published papers.  Using it can position your work within an established body of literature.

European compliance officer. Your firm operates under ESMA rules and requires BMR-certified benchmarks. HFR’s IOSCO/ESMA credentials make it one of the few hedge fund index providers that satisfies this requirement out of the box.

Do You Actually Need Both?

Some institutions use Preqin and HFR simultaneously and it is not as redundant as it sounds. Preqin answers the “who” questions: who manages the fund, who invests in it, who is raising capital?  HFR answers the “how” questions: how did the strategy perform, how does this fund compare to its benchmark, how has the industry evolved over three decades.

However, running both subscriptions is expensive. If your budget forces a choice, the deciding factor is usually which side of the table you sit on. Allocators and fundraisers lean Preqin and performance analysts and compliance teams lean HFR.

And if you sit on neither side, if your actual need is reaching hedge fund professionals for sales, marketing, or recruiting, then both platforms are solving a problem you do not have.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Preqin include hedge fund indices?

Preqin offers some proprietary hedge fund benchmarks, but index coverage is not its primary strength. HFR’s 500+ HFRI indices are far more comprehensive and carry IOSCO/ESMA regulatory certification. If index-level benchmarking is a core requirement, HFR is the better tool. If indices are a nice-to-have alongside LP data and cross-asset coverage, Preqin’s benchmarks may be sufficient.

Can HFR tell me which investors allocate to hedge funds?

No. HFR focuses on fund performance and indices, not investor intelligence. It does not maintain a database of LPs, their mandates, or their commitment histories. For that data, Preqin is the industry leader. PitchBook also offers investor data, though its strength is more on the PE/VC side.

Which is more expensive, Preqin or HFR?

Neither publishes pricing, so direct comparison is difficult. Preqin subscriptions are generally understood to start around $15,000/year and scale to $50,000+ for enterprise access. HFR pricing is not publicly discussed but is generally considered to fall below Preqin’s range. Both require a sales conversation for exact quotes.

Is there overlap between Preqin and HFR?

Some. Both track hedge fund performance data and maintain fund databases. However, the overlap is smaller than you might expect. Preqin’s hedge fund data is one module in a multi-asset platform. HFR’s hedge fund data is the entire platform, with much deeper index coverage and regulatory certification. The biggest non-overlapping areas: Preqin has LP data and cross-asset coverage. HFR has 500+ certified indices and 30+ years of benchmark history.

What if I need hedge fund data but not indices or LP profiles?

If you need fund-level performance analytics without index benchmarking, BarclayHedge ($5,000 to $7,250/year) offers 350+ data fields per fund at a fraction of the cost of either Preqin or HFR. If you need contact data for outreach, HedgeLists ($117 to $237 one-time) provides emails, executive names, and AUM for 10,000+ funds. Both are more targeted and significantly less expensive than enterprise platforms.
